2025 New PSLE Situational Writing: What You Need to Know

From 2025 onwards, the Ministry of Education (MOE) and Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board (SEAB) will implement a new question style in PSLE Situational Writing. This update will bring some key changes to the PSLE English Situational Writing component, requiring students to be more analytical and adaptable in their responses. In this article, we will discuss the latest updates, key formats, scoring changes, and strategies to excel in the new Situational Writing PSLE format.

The New PSLE Situational Writing Format

Situational Writing PSLE assesses a student’s ability to write a concise and purposeful piece of writing based on a given prompt. This task typically requires writing a letter, email, or report while adhering to the PSLE Situational Writing Format.

With the 2025 changes, a new article format has been introduced. This aligns with the skills students will need in secondary school, where article writing becomes more prevalent.

The New PSLE Situational Writing Format
  1. Changes in the PSLE Situational Writing Scoring System

A notable change in the new PSLE Situational Writing Rubrics is the adjustment in the scoring distribution between Content and Language.

While the total score remains 15 marks, the reduction in Language marks suggests that there may be stricter marking for grammar, spelling, and punctuation mistakes. Students should pay closer attention to their language proficiency to avoid losing marks unnecessarily.

The content points are essential in fulfilling the Situational Writing Task. In 2025, one content point will now be underlined in the Task Box. This means students must infer and make logical inferences, rather than simply extracting information from the pictures and information provided.

Key takeaway: Students should practice making reasonable assumptions based on the given information and ensure that all content points are accurately addressed.

  1. New Question Type: Article Format

    New Question Type: Article Format

The PSLE Situational Writing Format has always included letters (formal and informal), emails, and reports. However, starting in 2025, there will be a new article format. Writing an article is different from writing a letter or an email because it often requires:

    • A clear structure with a title and subheadings

    • A balance of informative and engaging language

    • Consideration of the Purpose, Audience, and Context (PAC)

This new format encourages students to think critically and present information cohesively. It also prepares them for secondary school English assignments.

Since one content point now requires inference, students should regularly practice identifying implied meanings and making logical connections from given information.

    2. Master the Different Formats

Each format has unique features, so students should practice writing formal and informal letters, emails, reports, and now articles. Understanding the nuances of each format will make it easier to adapt to different tasks.

    3. Focus on Task Fulfilment

Ensure all required content points are covered and the Purpose, Audience, and Context are appropriately addressed.

    4. Minimise Punctuation Mistakes

Since language marks have been reduced, every mistake will have a greater impact on the final score. Students should proofread carefully and avoid common punctuation mistakes.
